95 acres of poppy field destroyed

IMPHAL, Jan 13 : Security forces and Forest personnel destroyed 95 acres of poppy plantations in two different operations at Chandel and Senapati district today.
A total of 65 acres of the illegal opium poppy plantation was destroyed at Govok hill range under Chakpikarong in Chandel district.
Security forces and personnel of the Forest Department also destroyed two huts, poppy pods and seeds found at the site, said police.
In another operation, security forces and Forest personnel destroyed 30 acres of poppy plantations at Sadim hills range under Senapati police station.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of SP Senapati, and led by Additional SP.
A total of 73 officers and personnel took part in the drive. The team included personnel of Senapati district police, B-109 CRPF, F-36 CRPF & C-142 CRPF, representatives from Forest Department and Executive Magistrate. Beside destroying the 30 acres of poppy plantations, the personnel also destroyed and burnt down 4 huts, 2 bags of urea, 2 bags of salt, one small well used for storing water, irrigation pipes and a few kilograms of poppy seeds found at the sites.
The Senapati police station has registered a case for investigation. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest the cultivators and landowners, said the police.
