IMPHAL, Jan 13: What began as a quiet Christmas morning with prayers and family soon turned into a race against time for a man from Kohima and a decision his son says saved his father's life.
The man experienced chest discomfort. Suspecting it to be an onset of cardiac arrest, the family drove through the night for hours before being saved at Imphal Heart Institute.
After attending Christmas service, the patient complained of chest discomfort. The symptoms were initially mistaken for a gastric problem. But as the hours passed, the pain intensified.
During the long road journey toward Imphal, his condition worsened, experiencing repeated vomiting, weakness, and visibly distressed.
Realising the seriousness of the situation, the family made an emergency stop at a district hospital in Senapati, where the patient was stabilised. It was there that the family took a critical decision: to continue the journey to one of the best-equipped cardiac facilities available in the North East, despite the distance, the late hour, and the uncertainty of the road ahead.
The family drove nearly five hours, knowing every minute mattered.
They reached Imphal Heart Institute around 7.30 pm on Christmas night.
Within minutes of admission, doctors confirmed a severe heart attack.
Despite it being a holiday night, the cardiac emergency team responded immediately.
Urgent diagnostic evaluation was followed by definitive treatment the same night.
A primary angioplasty (stent insertion) was done, an intervention that proved lifesaving.
The patient is now stable and recovering well.
Cardiac specialists note that many heart attack deaths occur not due to lack of treatment options, but because symptoms are misunderstood and referral to definitive care is delayed.
Choosing the right facility at the right time often determines survival.
For the family, Christmas will now be remembered not just as a day of faith and celebration but as the night they made a hard decision and were given their father back.
Imphal Heart Institute is among the leading centres for advanced cardiac care in the region, with 400+ open-heart surgeries, 650+ angioplasties, and 200+ pacemaker implantations to its credit.
Equipped with a state-of-the-art cath lab, modem cardiac operating theatres, dedicated cardiac ICUs, and an experienced emergency team, the institute is increasingly relied upon for time-critical cardiac emergencies from Manipur and neighbouring States.
