'Wanted' man attacks police officer

IMPHAL, Jan 17 : In a shocking incident, a police officer assigned to serve an arrest warrant to a person involved in a homicide case was attacked with a knife by the individual at Talui village, under Somdal police station in Ukhrul.
The incident occurred yesterday before noon, around 11 am and the attacker has been arrested.
Fortunately, Krili James, the police officer, sustained only minor injuries and is now out of danger.
Krili James is the Officer in-Charge of Somdal police station.
It is reported that a team of police led by the OC of Somdal PS went to the residence of one Firstman Rungsung (54), an accused in a 1996 homicide case, at Talui Village to serve a bailable arrest warrant issued by the Session Judge, Ukhrul.
The report further stated that the police officer informed the accused's mother about the arrest warrant.
After a while, Firstman Rungsung came out, and the officer then notified him about the warrant as well.
It is reported that Firstman suddenly attacked the police officer with a knife.
However, the knife struck the officer's whistle chord, deflected, and then hit the officer's chest.
The report stated that the police team accompanying their OC attempted to subdue Firstman, but they were unable to overpower him as he was armed.
The accused was arrested after an additional team of Ukhrul police arrived at the scene.
He was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ukhrul today and the Court has remanded him in police custody till January 23.
Meanwhile, Krili James was initially taken to Talui PHC and later transferred to Ukhrul District Hospital.
He has been discharged from the hospital.
