IMPHAL, Jan 20: There will be an all India bank strike on January 27, said the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) today.
The UFBU is the joint coordination body of nine bank unions.
The strike has been called to press the long-pending demand for the introduction of 5-day banking, including declaring the remaining Saturdays as holidays, as agreed in the bipartite settlement reached in March 2024 between the Indian Banks' Association ((BA) and UFBU, said the UFBU Manipur State in a statement.
Notably, bank employees and officers across the country have been launching various agitations, including demonstrations and wearing badges, to highlight their demand.
UFBU said its demand does not result in any loss of working hours, as bank employees have already agreed to compensate by working additional time on working days.
Several major financial institutions and Government offices are already functioning on a five-day work week format. Despite this, the Government has not yet taken a decision to implement 5-day banking, leading to growing dissatisfaction among bank employees, it said.
In view of the continued inaction, UFBU has decided to proceed with the Nationwide strike on January 27, it said, requesting to the public to plan their banking transactions in advance and make maximum use of digital banking platforms such as internet banking, mobile banking, UPI, ATMs, and other electronic channels during the strike period.
The United Forum of Bank Unions is the joint co-ordination body of All India Bank Employees Association, All India Bank Officers Confederation, National Confederation of Bank Unions, All India Bank Officers Association, Bank Employees Federation of India, Indian National Bank Employees Federation, Indian National Bank Officers' Congress, National Organisation of Bank Workers and National Organisation of Bank Officers.
