IMPHAL, Jan 20: Several organisations, including the All Manipur United Clubs' Organization (AMUCO), Committee on Human Rights (COHR) Manipur and Meira Paibi bodies have extended relief materials to people of Leitanpokpi in Imphal East who had recently returned from internally displaced camps.
The material assistance extended included clothing, books and uniforms for students, edible items, rice and pulses.
While distributing the aid material, AMUCO president Sorokhaibam Sanjoy blamed the Government for the unrest in Manipur, and accused it of trying to break the State.
Since its merger with India, Manipur has suffered, he said. In the post colonial period, India is still continuing the policies the British had implemented in Manipur to divide the people, hills and valley, he said.
Even after more than 2 years, the Government of India is yet to resolve the Manipur conflict. It has also failed to facilitate and complete the return of the internally displaced persons to their homes till today, he said.
The internally displaced persons are experiencing severe economic crises having lost reliable sources of income amid the crisis. To provide them relief, the Government must therefore waive off the loans taken by them, he said.
The Government must bring about a special package for rehabilitation and providing livelihood to the internally displaced persons, he added. Committee on Human Right (COHR) chairman Phulindro Konsam said there are buffer zones in Manipur despite the Government's claim that there are none. People belonging to the Meitei community are still prevented by security forces from entering many areas in Manipur. It is clear evidence of security forces demarcating and implementing buffer zones, he said.
The aid was extended by the All Manipur United Clubs' Organization (AMUCO), Committee on Human Rights (COHR) Manipur, Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Manipur, All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA) and Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF).
Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi Manipur president Soraisam Memcha, AMAWOVA president Yumkhaibam Kunjarani, MSF vice president Ningombam Prem and Village Development Committee Leitanpokpi chairman Wahengbam Nimai were present.
