IMPHAL, Jan 28 : Manipur is set to host the 1st North East Indigenous Games from February 23 to 25 in Imphal, said the chairman of “Yelhou Masanna Yokkhat Lup’s Core Committee” and AMUCO president Sorokhaibam Sanjoy.
The announcement for the games aim at preserving and promoting “indigenous sports” was made during a press meet held today at the AMUCO’s Kwakeithel office.
The games will feature 4 events- Cheibi, Mukna, Kang and Arambai, he said while adding that the events will be held at Tiddim ground and Mapal Kangjeibung.
He also maintained that the committee looked forward to adding more indigenous games in the next edition.
Highlighting Manipur’s rich sports culture and recalling National Games success in 1999, Sanjoy maintained that the inaugural edition will set a new benchmark.
He also introduced other key members of the “Core Committee” including president of Apunba Manipur Huiyen Lallong Lup, W Manglem Meitei as the vice chairman; secretary of AMHLL, Sapam Inaobi as the convenor; vice president of AMUCO Dr Norendro Thokchom and president of MSF, Hijam Roshan as co-convenors.
Stating that indigenous games play a huge role in distinguishing the erstwhile kingdom and in making the small State known to the world, Sanjoy also sought cooperation from all quarters of the society in making the games successful and lend a helping hand in preserving and promoting indigenous games of the region.
