IMPHAL, Jan 2: Union Home Minister Amit Shah today chaired a high-level meeting on the current situation of Manipur at New Delhi.
The meeting was attended by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel and DGP Rajiv Singh.
Although what exactly transpired at the meeting could not be ascertained till the time of filing this report, sources said that the meeting focused on the prevailing law and order situation, security arrangements and development related matters.
The meeting is seen to be highly significant as the present term of the President’s Rule is set to expire on February 13, 2026.
Many BJP MLAs earlier stated publicly that a popular Government will be reinstalled in Manipur soon and there will be no further extension of President’s Rule.
Officials indicated that ensuring stability and security will be key factors in any decision to facilitate the return of an elected Government.
After the resignation of then Chief Minister N Biren Singh on February 9, 2025, Manipur was placed under President’s Rule with effect from February 13, 2025.
President’s Rule initially imposed for a period of six months was extended for another six months on August 13, 2025.
In the meantime, BJP MLAs of Manipur went to Delhi repeatedly and met some Central BJP leaders,  exploring possibilities of the reinstatement of a popular Government in the State.
Speculations for the return of a popular Govt in Manipur went abuzz when BJP Central leadership convened a meeting of all BJP legislators from the State at New Delhi on December 14, 2025.
For the first time since the violent crisis erupted, Meitei and Kuki-Zo BJP MLAs sat together at the meeting along with Naga MLAs of the party.
At least 34 BJP MLAs including Speaker Th Satyabrata and ex-Chief Minister N Biren were present at the meeting. Moreover, BJP Manipur Pradesh president A Sharda too attended the meeting.
During the meeting on December 14, 2025, BJP Central leaders reportedly advised the legislators from Manipur to work collectively towards restoring political stability and forming an inclusive Government which represents all the communities.
BJP National general secretary BL Santosh and the party’s North East coordinator Sambit Patra reportedly  met the Meitei and Kuki-Zo MLAs separately before holding a joint meeting which lasted for more than three hours.
Coming back from the meeting, some BJP MLAs told the media that the meeting explored ways to restore normalcy in Manipur and a popular Government would be formed once normalcy is restored.
It was in this backdrop and amid many BJP MLAs’ strong belief for the reinstatement of a popular Government soon that Amit Shah chaired a high level meeting today.
The outcome of today’s meeting is expected to play a significant role in shaping the Centre’s strategy for restoring peace, accelerating development, and charting a political roadmap for Manipur’s return to democratic governance.
