IMPHAL, Jan 30 : Former Chief Minister O Ibobi has stated that non-violence preached by Mahatma Gandhi is becoming increasingly relevant today, in light of the rising tensions and conflicts around the world.
As in other places, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) observed the 78th death anniversary of the Father of the Nation at Congress Bhavan today.
The observance, attended by several Congress leaders including CLP leader O Ibobi, MPCC president K Meghachandra, Congress Working Committee (AICC) member Gaikhangam, ex Congress MPs and MLAs, began by offering floral tributes at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
Addressing the programme, Ibobi emphasised that Mahatma Gandhi was not only an Indian leader who played a pivotal role in India’s freedom movement, but also a global figure admired and revered world- wide.
The Gandhian concept of non-violence is increasingly vital today for resolving complex global conflicts, he said.
Conflicts among Nations and the growing arms race between countries are becoming increasingly alarming, he said and added that every country needs to promote non-violence to address these challenges.
Stating that Mahatma Gandhi was a selfless individual, he said that foreign leaders often visit Raj Ghat to pay their respect, recognizing Gandhi's global influence.
He also noted that October 2, Gandhi's birthday, is observed as the International Day of Non-Violence.
