MOIRANG, Jan 30 : The Meetei/Meitei Tribe Union (MMTU) convened a meeting at Kumbi College today as part of its "No ST, No Vote" campaign.
The meeting was attended by Kumbi College Vice Principal Akoijam Jibankumar, MMTU president Salam Gourakishore and treasurer Thokchom Gopimohon as dais members.
At the meeting, MMTU secretary (Administration) Mutum Churamani stated that political parties only work for their own benefits, emphasising that strong pressure must be mounted on them to address the demand for enlisting the Meeteis in the ST list.
He said that they launched the "No ST, No Vote" campaign to remind political parties of the widespread protests in Nepal and Bangladesh, which toppled Governments in those countries.
He warned that a similar situation could occur in Manipur if their demand is ignored.
Churamani claimed that some wealthy politicians in Manipur have been acting with impunity, and their misdeeds are causing significant hardship to the poor, the displaced folks and working-class people. He appealed to the public to support candidates who can advance the demand to enlist the Meeteis in the ST list in the upcoming Assembly elections.
MMTU secretary (organisation) T Parijat said that demanding ST status for the Meetei is also for the well-being of Meeteis scattered across States like Assam, Tripura, Nagaland, Meghalaya etc.
