Gaang-Ngai fosters peaceful coexistence

IMPHAL, Jan 4: On the 4th day of the Gaan-Ngai festival today, Meira Paibis of Lilong Chajing and members of All Manipur Ethnical Socio Cultural Organisation (AMESCO) visited the Langthabal Khoupum Kabui village and exchanged Athenpot (gifts).
AMESCO president Wahengbam Chinglemba, general secretary Deepu Wangkhem, vice president Joy Ningthouja, several members and advisors of the organisation and Meira Paibis took part in the celebration.
Gaan-Ngai is a post harvest festival celebrated to thank the God Tingkao Ragwang for a good harvest season, and it heralds the beginning of a New Year. It celebrates the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.
On the occasion, AMESCO president Wahengbam Chinglemba said that the organisation took part in the celebration with the objective to foster the relationship with the Kabui people.
He said the organisation has been, since 1998, visiting Kabui villages on Gaan-Ngai festival bringing them Athenpot (gifts).
He said AMESCO has been visiting different Kabui villages since January 1, the beginning of the festival.
To foster peaceful coexistence and relationship among indigenous communities, one community should take part in the festival of the other, he said.
Langthabal Khoupum Kabui village member Sanajaoba Kabui said the villagers welcome the AMESCO gesture wholeheartedly. He said such gestures would help foster the relationship between communities.
He wished the Gaan-Ngai festival to bring about normalcy in the State and foster peaceful coexistence of all communities.
Cultural dances and songs were performed by youths on the 4th day of the festival.
