IMPHAL, Jan 3: The Laiyingthou Langol Ning-thou Charitable Trust has appealed to the authorities concerned to halt all eviction processes in the Meitei Langol area until the High Court of Manipur’s winter vacation is over.
According to a press release issued by the Laiying- thou Langol Ningthou Charitable Trust, an eviction order was issued recently when a case is pending in the High Court of Manipur regarding uncertainty/disputes between Meitei Langol revenue land and forest land.
With the eviction order issued at a time when the High Court of Manipur has been declared holiday on account of winter vacation, the affected land owners are being denied any opportunity to go to the Court.
Several Supreme Court judgements laid down very clearly that the Forest Department cannot carry out eviction by exercising the power of a Civil Court, the trust said.
However, the Forest Department had evicted many families by exercising the power of a Civil Court before the High Court of Manipur intervened and put a brake on the eviction drive, it said.
But the recent eviction order was issued taking advantage of the High Court of Manipur’s winter vacation thereby denying affected families any opportunity to challenge the same order, it added.
