IMPHAL, Jan 5: Judicial Magistrate First Class Imphal West II today remanded 9 persons, allegedly involved in the selling of a 6-year-old boy, to further police custody till January 9 for smooth investigation of the case.
The accused persons who have been taken into further police custody include the parents of the baby boy.
They were produced before the Court after completion of their police custody period along with a prayer for further remand.
Notably, the accused were arrested after a complaint was filed by the uncle of the minor boy with Patsoi police station.
The parents allegedly sold the minor boy to a family at Uripok for Rs 1 lakh.
On December 26, 2025, the parents and another person left home with the boy and returned without him.
When the uncle enquired the whereabouts of the child, the parents allegedly said that the boy has been admitted to a hostel for education.
Several days later, on the intervening night of December 30 and 31, when family members put pressure, the parents allegedly revealed that the child had been sold off to an "unknown" family at Uripok for Rs 1 lakh.
Subsequently, the child's family then returned the money and demanded his return.
Two individuals, including one working as an attendant at RIMS, allegedly refused to return the child and threatened the parents and the family members.
In the Court today, the Assistant Public Prosecutor submitted that during interrogation, the accused persons have admitted to the charges levelled against them.
The Prosecutor said that during the course of the investigation, police recovered Rs 85,000 from one of the accused.
The Prosecutor then sought further police remand of the accused to complete the investigation.
The Court, after hearing the submission of the Prosecutor and on perusal of the case record, remanded the accused persons to police custody till January 9.
