UKHRUL, Jan 5: The BJP Ukhrul district  has come out strongly against the National Highways Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) for failing to improve the NH-102(A) stretch from Finch Corner to Ukhrul town.
Speaking to this correspondent, Ukhrul District BJP working president Longyao Raihing said that the 30-kilometre stretch from Finch Corner to Ukhrul town via Hungpung village is in a pathetic condition.
The road has been left unattended and abandoned for nearly 10 years after the NHIDCL took over the construction and maintenance work.
The stretch of the road was damaged during the rainy season, but it has not been repaired even when there is a separate fund reserved for this purpose, he claimed.
With no maintenance and repairing work, the stretch of the highway is in a deplorable condition, causing inconveniences to the people of the region, he added.
The road is full of potholes, and dusty in the dry season. It is slushy in the rainy season. The road is posing a risk to public health, and many road accidents have occurred, he added.
Longyao said the Ukhrul district BJP and the denizens of the district vehemently condemn the indifferent attitude of the NHIDCL.
Frequent postponement of tender process and delay in awarding work order without appropriate reason have also marred the road infrastructure, and such lackadaisical approach of the NHIDCL has angered the public, he said.
Meanwhile, persons who frequently commute on the road said their vehicles break down frequently due to the deplorable condition of the road.
The dust from the road has also become a health risk, particularly to those who are already suffering from asthma and susceptible to allergies.
Longyao said the Ukhrul BJP is urging the authorities concerned to look into the plight of the people, and expedite the reconstruction work without further delay.
The Ukhrul district BJP will monitor all the ongoing developmental works being executed in the district to ensure quality in the interest of the general public, he added.
