IMPHAL, Jan 8 : Former MLA of Thangmeiband and a founding member of BJP Manipur Pradesh Meinam Bhorot passed away today after a prolonged illness.
He was 75.
Bhorot, who had been undergoing treatment for cancer at Karkinos Hospital, Porompat, breathed his last around 5.30 am.
He is survived by his wife Meinam ongbi Bimola and four children - three sons and a daughter.
Born to M Amuba and M Tombisana at Nagamapal Kangjabi Leirak on April 7, 1950, Bhorot completed his MA in English from Kalyani University in West Bengal. He had also completed RSS OTC training.
Bhorot who joined Janata Party (now BJP) in 1976 established BJP Manipur Pradesh on September 25, 1980 along with Late Raghumani Sharma, Late RK Dolansana, Th Yumjao and Dr H Borbabu.
He was elected as the president of BJP Manipur Pradesh in December 1991 and was re-elected to the same position in October 2000, following which he served as the BJP National secretary from 2003 to 2004.
He had also contested the State Assembly elections multiple times (1984, 1995, 2000, 2002, 2007, and 2012) from Thangmeiband Constituency on a BJP ticket, securing a victory in the 2002 Assembly election.
In addition to his political career, he was also an accomplished writer, having authored three novels - "Madam" (Volume I and II), "Mami Sengkhidraba Nungshiba", and "Sana Chahi Ahum".
Meanwhile, several MLAs, former MLAs, and party functionaries, including BJP Manipur president A Sharda Devi visited his residence and offered their condolences.
His mortal remains were draped in the BJP flag as a mark of the highest respect from the party.
