IMPHAL, Jan 8 : The North East Society, Dr BR Ambedkar University, Delhi (NESAUD) has strongly condemned the brutal, racially motivated killing of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, who was murdered in Uttarakhand after objecting to racial slurs while buying vegetables at a local market.
“This inhumane act is not merely an individual crime but a chilling reflection of the deep-rooted racism and discrimination faced by people from the Northeast, particularly students pursuing higher education outside the region”, said NESAUD in a release.
NESAUD lamented that from the tragic killing of Nido Tania to the recent murder of Anjel Chakma, racism against Northeast Indians continues unchecked, exposing a serious failure of the State to protect its own citizens.
“Such acts of racial violence strike at the very foundation of India's constitutional values of equality, dignity, and fraternity”, said NESAUD while demanding the relevant authorities to identify the perpetrators responsible for the heinous crime and award exemplary punishment as per the law.
NESAUD also urged the Government of India to acknowledge the gravity of institutional and social racism faced by Northeast communities and to enact comprehensive anti-racism laws to end discrimination once and for all.
“Northeast students across India continue to face racial abuse, stereotyping, social exclusion, and violence simply for their identity. This must stop. The Northeast is an integral part of India, and its people deserve safety, respect, and equal treatment everywhere in the country”, said NESAUD.
