IMPHAL, Jan 9: On the occasion of the 192nd death anniversary of Maharaj Gambhir Singh, the Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS) commemorated the Seven Years Devastation or Chahi Taret Khuntakpa.
Offering of floral tributes to the portrait of Maharaj Gambhir Singh was the main feature of the function where members of MWF, UMO, MKNM, MMWO, FOCS Women Wing, Bishnupur and Kakching district committees and KUCMA were present.
FOCS acting president BM Yaima Shah who presided over the function recalled how rivalry and struggle for the throne among the Manipuri princes gave undue advantage to the Burmese king to invade and occupy Manipur.
This led to the Seven Years Devastation and Manipuri princes namely; Chourajit, Marjit and Gambhir Singh fled to Cachar.
In Cachar, Gambhir Singh and Narasingh set up a Manipur Levy with 500 soldiers while Herachandra, leading a band of warriors, continued to fight the Burmese soldiers in Manipur.
Later, the Manipur Levy led by Gambhir Singh and Narasingh and Herachandra’s band of warriors successfully drove out the Burmese soldiers and liberated Manipur, BM Yaima Shah said.
He then underscored the need for collective struggle instead of struggling separately in order to make Manipur a peaceful and progressive Nation.
