UKHRUL, Jan 31
Residents of Hungpung, Shangshak Phunghon, Shangshak Khullen, and Hatha villages have warned of a 72-hour NH-202 blockade from February 4 to 6.
The highway stretch from Finch Corner to Choithar Junction will be blocked for 72 hours if Government authorities fail to address "our grievances", said the villagers.
Notably, residents have been urging the Government and relevant authorities to complete the highway expansion work and release due compensations to households affected by the project.
The villagers said they submitted a representation to Ukhrul Deputy Commissioner on January 28, urging immediate action on the neglected NH-202 expansion project and the land compensation issue.
The NH-202 expansion work began in 2018, but the Finch Corner to Choithar Junction stretch has been left neglected, they said.
The NH-202 is a vital corridor for emergency medical care, commerce, education and overall wellbeing of the entire popula- tion of Ukhrul district, they said.
Land acquisition has been completed, but compensations have not been paid to villagers, they said.
Works under Package-3 and Package-4 have been stalled, causing public suffering. The road is filled with potholes and frequently affected by landslides, they said.
The work for Yaingang-pokpi to Finch Corner package is ongoing, while the Finch Corner to Hung-pung package tender has been cancelled with pending funds.
The tender of the Hungpung to Choithar package has not been done, they said.
The proposed blockade will be withdrawn only when authorities concerned of the Government assure progress within a week, said the villagers.
