Manipur police on Tuesday warned of strict legal action against individuals and social media accounts spreading misinformation and instigating communal tension following the recent violence in Litan, Ukhrul district.
According to a police bulletin, circulating fake news, rumours, or misleading content about the State’s internal situation will be treated as sedition, with offenders liable for prosecution.
The advisory comes after videos circulated on social media suggested that security forces, allegedly along with Kuki militants, set fire to Tangkhul homes in Litan Sareikhong. Reports claimed that over 20 houses were razed around midnight.
The police clarified that these claims were false and misleading. Upon receiving reports of an arson incident, Manipur Police immediately dispatched teams and summoned the fire brigade. An Army team also arrived shortly after, while local youths reportedly demanded that the personnel leave the area. Some of these youths recorded videos and circulated unfounded allegations that the Security Forces had torched the houses.
In this connection, police have registered cases against an X (formerly Twitter) user and a Facebook user for allegedly spreading misinformation.
Authorities reiterated that legal action will be taken against anyone found spreading such false or provocative information, underscoring the importance of responsible reporting and social media use during sensitive situations. North East Now
