IMPHAL, Feb 12 : The JAC against the unnatural death of Seram ningol Salam ongbi Niroda Devi has sought public support to help deliver justice in this case.
At a press briefing held today at the Koubru Hall of Manipur Press Club, Seram Ratan, JAC representative raised suspicion on Niroda's husband, Salam Tomba, stating that he should have a clear idea about why she left home abandoning their 8-year old daughter and new-born son.
According to Ratan, Niroda recently gave birth to a baby boy on January 19, 2026. The Epan Thaba ceremony was conducted on January 24, while she went missing on the intervening night of January 27 and 28 from Kwakeithel Lamdong Leikai. Her dead body was found floating in the Nambul River at Heirangoithong on February 10.
Ratan claimed that Tomba remained nonchalant and did not show any signs of grief or distress on the day Niroda went missing.
Raising suspicion over his behaviour, he questioned why, as a husband, he did not make all out efforts to search for his wife on the first day itself.
An FIR has also been filed in this regard, citing "unnatural cause of death", he added.
As per Niroda's sister, Seram ningol Nandani, their mother had been staying at her place to take care of the nursing mother. Niroda went missing while their mother had returned home for an event.
She went on to question why her sister's husband did not show up when her lifeless body was discovered in the Nambul River and why he did not claim the dead body.
Expressing mistrust, she also asked why he has remained mum on the issue.
Further, she called it surprising that the suicide note allegedly written by Niroda instructed all her property to be handed over to her paternal family at Khongman. This raises a series of questions, she said.
As such, she has urged the people of Manipur to help unearth the truth about her sister's death and ensure appropriate punishment for the alleged culprit(s).
Notably, Niroda was an MSPDCL employee while her husband worked at Imphal College as an Assistant Professor (Mathematics).
