IMPHAL, Feb 13 : The Naharol Sintha Kanglup (NSK) has maintained that the views expressed in a news report concerning the plight of flood affected residents of Wangkhei Yonglan Leirak and the absence of Government help in this regard appear to be politically motivated.
Wangkhei Yonglan Leirak comes under Yaiskul Assembly Constituency in Imphal East. The area also falls under the jurisdiction of NSK.
Speaking to the press at NSK multipurpose community hall at Wangkhei Keithel Ashangbi, Maibam Sherjit, general secretary, NSK, has appealed against any attempts to tarnish the reputation of NSK and Yaiskul AC MLA and Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata.
In May, 2025 when flood waters breached the Imphal and Kongba rivers, many areas in Imphal East including Wangkhei Yonglan Leirak were flooded.
Here, the general secretary highlighted the efforts undertaken by NSK including stacking sandbags to stop the flood waters, evacuating the flood affected families to safer locations, conducting publicity drives urging the public to stay alert and cautious and arranging two boats from Thanga Karang to help in evacuating both people and their possessions.
A relief camp for flood affected families was set up at NSK multipurpose community hall with the help of Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata where the latter reportedly arranged all essential items.
With the aim of protecting the areas under NSK jurisdiction from repeated floods, the Club made an appeal to the Speaker for the cleaning, repair and brand new construction of drains.
Following this, construction work began on July 21, 2025 with the infusion of the required funds and heavy machinery by the Yaiskul AC MLA.
These developmental works continued across Yonglan Leirak, Wangkhei Keithel Ashangbi and Lourembam Leirak for 3-4 months.
Sherjit stated that there are hardly any localities under NSK where the cleaning and construction of drains have not taken place.
