IMPHAL, Feb 14 : Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has announced that the Government is committed to develop a world class polo ground at Lamphelpat, Imphal West.
The announcement was made while attending the closing ceremony of the 2nd Dr Ksh Chourjit Singh Inter-District Polo Tournament, 2026 held at Mapal Kangjeibung today.
The Tournament was organised by the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association, Imphal.
Speaking on the occasion, Yumnam Khemchand Singh mentioned that it is well- known that the game of polo originated from our State.
He further stated that he has been informed that the existing Mapal Kangjeibung Polo Ground does not meet the necessary standards for hosting international matches. The Government is committed to develop a world-class polo ground on a 32-acre plot of land that has been earmarked at Lamphelpat, he added.
Further, Yumnam Khemchand Singh said that his commitment to the initiative is unwavering. He assured that he will visit the site tomorrow for an inspection, accompanied by concerned officials and members of the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association (MHRPA), to deliberate on the modalities for the development of the polo ground.
The final match of the tournament between X Polo Club and Chingkheihunba Polo Club began with the throw-in of the Polo ball by the Chief Minister.
The closing ceremony was attended by the family members of Dr Ksh Chourjit Singh; president of MHRPA, H Deleep Singh; technical chairman of MHRPA, N Bedajeet Singh and Ksh Lakshaheb Singh and students among others.
X-Polo Club were crowned the champions of the 10-team tournament as they overcame Chingkheihunba Polo Club by 6-4 goals in the final showdown today courtesy of two goals apiece from L Atangba, Th Shantosh and Th Jacob.
Chingkheihunba Polo Club dominated the earlier proceedings and the first chukker 3-0 but X-Polo Club fought back and made it 2-3 at the end of the second chukker before drawing level in the third chukker by adding a goal.
X-Polo Club scored three more goals in rapid fire fashion in the final chukker to take a 6-3 lead before Chingkheihunba Polo Club added one to make the final scoreline read 4-6.
O Rozer opened the scoring for Chingkheihunba Polo Club in the third minute before Leisemba scored twice, one each in the 5th and the 6th minutes to make it 3-0.
L Atangba and Th Shantosh however added a goal apiece to reduce the margin for X-Polo Club in the second chukker before Shantosh completed his double in the 5th minute of the third chukker and closed out the margin.
Th Jacob scored back to back in the first and the second minute of the final chukker to overturn the lead in X-Polo Club’s favour before Atangba completed his double within the second minute. Chingkheihunba Polo Club who failed to find the target in the second and the third chukker gathered some courage and made it 4-6 in the 6th minute but failed to further capitalise on their chances and eventually X-Polo Club walked away 6-4 winners.
