IMPHAL, Feb 15: Loumi Kanglup Lamphel (LOUKAL) advisor Chongtham Bijoy has accused the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association of misleading Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand and attempting to grab land belonging to farmers at Lamphelpat.
This accusation came after Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand made a declaration that a plot of land of the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association at Lamphelpat would be developed as a polo ground worthy of holding international tournaments.
The CM made the announcement at the closing ceremony of a polo tournament yesterday.
Speaking to reporters at his residence at Lamphel Khunou, Chongtham Bijoy said the Chief Minister could have been influenced by the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association to make the announcement and drag him into a "deep controversy".
He accused the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association of "attempting to grab" land belonging to farmers.
Bijoy claimed that the polo association's existing plot had already been acquired by the Government for a wetland rejuvenation project.
By influencing the Chief Minister to announce the development of a polo ground at Lamphelpat, the polo association is "attempting to grab" land belonging to LOUKAL farmers, he claimed.
He said the LOUKAL farmers have about 11 hectares of arable land at Lamphelpat.
The agricultural land at Lamphelpat is patta land and it belongs to the farmers. The plot, which the polo association is "attempting to grab", is patta land, and LOUKAL has all the documents and receipts of taxes paid, Bijoy said.
LOUKAL, as a registered body of farmers, stands to protect the interest of farmers and their livelihood, he said, urging Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand to look into the matter. LOUKAL expects the Chief Minister to act appropriately against "land mafia", and protect the rights and livelihood of farmers, who are genuine land owners, Bijoy said.
