IMPHAL, Feb 18: Expressing concern, Thangmeiband AC MLA Kh Joykisan has commented on how people continue to remain apathetic despite knowing the ill effects of plastic usage on human health and the environment.
He made the statement during a ceremony marking the opening of "Green Account" held today at Laijing Ningthou Junior High School organised by Kamdeva Trust.
The Green Account initiative involves engaging the school children to collect plastic wastes from their homes or surroundings and depositing it at the school to combat the scourge of plastic pollution. The amount of plastic waste collected by each student would be noted in their accounts. The initiative aims to inculcate this habit among children from a young age.
On the occasion, the Thangmeiband AC MLA said that the opening of Green Account has been necessitated by people's lack of concern for escalating plastic pollution.
Though people have started replacing plastic glasses with paper ones, the widespread usage of plastic bottles still cannot be curbed.
Thirty years ago cloth and paper bags were in vogue but with the passage of time the use of plastic items have increased dramatically.
Burning of plastic also releases toxic fumes which are hazardous to human health and may contribute to increasing cases of cancer in Manipur, maintained Kh Joykisan.
In the interest of future generations, people need to understand the importance of Green Accounts and support this initiative, he said.
Addressing the gathering, Arun Kumar Sinha, Principal Secretary, Environment, pointed out that people continue to use half-litre water bottles and Single Use Plastics though the Government has prohibited their use.
Highlighting the health implications of microplastics, he said that these plastic particles smaller than 5 millimetres are present in the foods and drinks people consume.
Until people make the collective decision to significantly curb the use of plastic products to save the environment, the human race will continue to face various problems caused by this major pollutant.
Today's event was attended by N Keertichand Singh, Secretary (Judicial), Law & Legislative Affairs Department; RK Amarjit Singh, Special Secretary, Forest, Environment & Climate Change; Dr T Brajakumar, Director, Environment & Climate Change and Thongbam Jesusen, Director, Kamdeva Trust.
