IMPHAL, Feb 18: The Keibul Lamjao National Park will be closed to visitors from February 20 to 27 for conducting Sangai census exercise.
This was informed by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests in a public notice.
For the management of Keibul Lamjao National Park and the estimation of the mean population of Sangai and associated species, the National Park Management will conduct census operations from February 20 to 27. The park will remain closed to visitors during the period, read the notice.
Sangai, (Rucervus eldii eldii) is the State animal of Manipur. The Manipur brow-antlered deer is listed as ‘endangered’ in the IUCN Red List and Schedule I of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
The population of the Sangai was just 14 in 1975.
With conservation efforts in place, the number increased to over 200 in 2016. While there are reports of a sharp decline in the number of the animal in 2023 with one report suggesting it was down to just 64 heads, the exact and most recent population is not known pending a census.
