IMPHAL, Feb 19 : The Editor of daily newspaper Naharolgi Thoudang, Khoirom Loyalakpa, was assaulted by unknown miscreants last night around 9.45.
The incident occurred near Hatta War Cemetery under the jurisdiction of Porompat police station in Imphal East.
According to reliable sources, the assailants, who arrived in a four-wheeler vehicle from the JNIMS Hospital side, fired a couple  of rounds at Loyalakpa’s car before assaulting him.
He was later rushed to JNIMS Hospital for medical treatment and later discharged. The injured Editor is reportedly recovering at home.
The miscreants fled the scene when some bystanders approached the area.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
In response to the incident, a joint emergency meeting was convened today by the All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) and the Editors Guild Manipur (EGM) at the Manipur Press Club.
After discussing the assault, the meeting resolved to hold a sit-in protest tomorrow at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai to condemn the assault.
This is not the first time that journalists in Manipur have been targeted and attacked and some have even been killed in the past. Threats are also common with many having received even bomb threats.
