Warder arrested for enabling mobile phone use by inmates in Manipur Central Jail

IMPHAL, Feb 19 : In a major security breach, a warder posted at Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa has been arrested for allegedly facilitating the unauthorised use of mobile phones by inmates, including those booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
According to Manipur Police, Sahid Shah (35), a resident of Kairang Mayai Leikai in Imphal East district, was apprehended on February 18 following credible inputs about illegal activities inside the jail.
During the operation, multiple mobile phones and SIM cards were seized from the prison premises.
Preliminary investigations revealed that inmates were allegedly making and receiving calls using the devices with the assistance of the accused warder.
Shockingly, financial transactions were also reportedly carried out from within the jail through Shah’s UPI account, indicating a possible larger network operating inside the prison.
In a post on X, Manipur Police confirmed the arrest and stated that further investigation is underway to determine the full extent of the involvement and identify other individuals linked to the case.
An FIR has been registered at Heingang Police Station in Imphal East district.
The arrest comes amid intensified crackdowns across the State on narcotics cultivation and illegal timber transportation, highlighting growing concerns over internal security lapses.
