IMPHAL, Feb 20 : The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) and the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) have called for public support as the Supreme Court is set to begin final hearings on petitions challenging the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) from May 5th this year.
NESO assistant general secretary, Wangjam Sanatomba, speaking to media persons in Imphal, stated that around 200 petitions were filed in the Supreme Court against the CAA after it was passed in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on December 11, 2019.
Both AASU and NESO are among the petitioners.
Sanatomba highlighted that a Supreme Court bench recently separated the cases related to Assam and Tripura from the other Nationwide petitions for distinct hearings, acknowledging that the CAA should not be implemented in the Northeast.
He further explained that the issue surrounding the CAA led to significant unrest in Manipur, which eventually resulted in the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system in the State.
The core concern, Sanatomba articulated, is that the CAA would grant Indian citizenship to illegal immigrants who entered the country without proper documentation, primarily from Bangladesh and other nations.
This, he warned, poses a major challenge to the demography, politics, and economy of the Northeastern states.
NESO, AASU, and Northeast indigenous groups stand united: no citizenship for illegal foreign nationals, he stressed.
Furthermore, Sanatomba urged full public cooperation to ensure a favorable outcome in the final hearing starting May 5, emphasizing the potential impact on the future of the indigenous communities.
