Brain dead man donates organs

IMPHAL, Feb 21: Shija Hospitals paid fitting tributes to the family of a road accident victim as the hospital recorded its fifth deceased organ donation.
Pebam Deben Singh (56) of Singjamei, Imphal met with a road accident on February 2 and was confirmed brain dead through two positive apnea tests on February 3.
The moment of profound loss transformed into an enduring gift of life when the family of the 56-year-old came forward for organ donation.
After the decision to donate organs was made, the procedure was conducted overnight through coordinated efforts across multiple departments of the Shija Hospitals.
Two kidneys were transplanted at Shija Hospitals and JNIMS, one liver was retrieved for transplantation, and two corneas were donated.
This selfless decision of the family brought hope to several patients and their families. It marked Shija Hospitals' fifth deceased organ donation and the first successful organ donation arising from a medico-legal case in the region, said the hospital in a statement.
The hospital said multiple departments of Shija Hospitals including the Department of Urology and Transplant Surgery, Dr Somorendro Paonam and Dr Mahele Maharabam; the Department of Anaesthesiology comprising Dr Kennedy T, Dr Kajal Momin, Dr Ananda Ngangom, Dr Tongbram Yashobanta, and Dr Linthoingambi Sanjetsabam; with specialist involvement from Dr Guliver Potsangbam, Nephrologist, and Dr Gautam Chabungbam, Neurosurgeon, Nursing and administrative teams  put in coordinated efforts.
The process was further supported by MOHAN Foundation, Government healthcare authorities, Manipur Police Department, Manipur Traffic Control Police, Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, and the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, it said.
This milestone has reinforced Shija Hospitals' leadership in renal care, having completed 126 kidney transplants to date, including the first deceased donor kidney transplant in North East India, first ABO-incompatible kidney transplant in the region, and five kidney transplants in Tripura in collaboration with AGMC, Agartala.
The hospital's dialysis service currently supports 448 patients and conducts approximately 140 sessions daily, including night shifts, with 40 additional machines being added, it said.
