IMPHAL, Feb 21 : Thangmeiband AC MLA Kh Joykisan has begun distributing plastic bottle banks to various local clubs in his Constituency to prevent plastic littering and safeguard the environment.
The distribution of the plastic bottle banks is a joint initiative by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change and the Thangmeiband Kendra Development Organisation (TAKDO).
Addressing a distribution event held at Khoyathong, the MLA stated that the impact of plastic pollution on the environment and all forms of life is immense.
Saying that the prevalence of cancer is rising in India, including in Manipur, he added that plastic is a major contributor to the disease.
He stated that despite the harmful health effects, burning plastic still continues.
Littering plastic bottles and dumping them in drains after a feast is a common practice in the State, the MLA said and added that plastic bottles can often be seen floating in the drains of Imphal City, emphasizing the need for proper disposal.
Appealing to the public to stop throwing plastic bottles carelessly, Joykisan encouraged people to collect and dispose of them properly, either by selling or discarding them in the plastic bottle banks.
He also called for afforestation to safeguard the environment. Simply planting trees is not enough, he said, adding that they need to be nurtured.
T Brajakumar, Director of Environment and Climate Change, said that safeguarding the environment needs collective effort. Appealing to the public not to discard plastic items carelessly, he added that improperly discarded plastic waste will eventually make its way to humans through fish and other animals.
Plastic items can be recycled, he said, and praised the Thangmeiband AC MLA and TAKDO for their concern for the environment and for installing plastic bottle banks at different localities of the Constituency. TAKDO president Khulem Nobokumar also attended the programme among others.
