Sit-in demands stringent punishment for rape accused

THOUBAL, Feb 21: A sit-in protest at Heirok on Saturday demanded stringent punishment for a man accused of raping an 11-year old girl.
The accused, Ningthoujam Mohindro Singh (55), an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) posted at Heirok police station, has been placed under suspension and remanded to judicial custody.
Speaking to media persons during the protest demonstration today, a Meira Paibi said the incident involving a police personnel entrusted with safeguarding the lives and security of the public is highly condemnable.
The accused must not be granted bail under any circumstances and given the stringent punishment, she said.
The protesters held placards that read "We Want Justice", "Stop Sexual Harassment of Minor Children", and "Award the Highest Punishment to the Accused", among others.
