IMPHAL, Feb 22: A total of 36,725 students are appearing in the High School Leaving Certificate Examination 2026 beginning tomorrow, February 23.
The Class X examination, conducted by the Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BOSEM) will be held across 161 examination centres across the State, and continue till March 23.
As a precautionary measure to curb unwanted incidents, disturbance and unfair means during the examination period, prohibitions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) have been enforced in and around all examination centres.
Individuals causing disturbances, involved in malpractices may be imprisoned for a period of 10 years and imposed a fine of upto Rs 1 crore under relevant Acts, BOSEM Secretary Shijagurumayum Jitelal has cautioned.
The 36,725 students appearing in the HSLCE 2026 include 18,375 males and 18,350 females.
19,046 students are appearing in the examination in the hills, and 17,679 are appearing in the valley.
The 161 examination centres include 100 in the valley and 61 in the hills.
A total of 392 internally displaced students including 231 from the valley and 161 from the hills are appearing in the examination. Bishnupur district has the highest number of internally displaced students appearing in the examination.
Private school students formed a major chunk of the students. The number of private school students appearing in the examination is 27,036.
The number of Government school students appearing is 8,191 and those of aided schools is 1,498.
Briefing media persons at the BOSEM office at Babupara, Imphal, its Secretary S Jitelal said the Board has taken appropriate measures to conduct the examination smoothly and fairly.
He said, the Board has held meetings with all officials including invigilators, sensitising them on the rules to be followed for smooth conduct of the examination.
To thwart unwanted incidents and malpractices, the Board has appointed 10 Nodal Officers in the hills, and formed more than 80 inspection teams, he said.
A total of 36 Inspection Teams and 12 Special Teams have been formed to monitor the conduct of the examination in the valley region, he said.
A similar number of around 36 Inspection Teams will monitor the examination in the hills, he added.
Jitelal said the Board will act swiftly and strictly against any incidents of malpractices.

The Manipur Prevention of Malpractices in High School Leaving Certificate Examination and Higher Secondary Examinations Act was enforced in 2024 to deter malpractices and protect the sanctity of the examination, he said.
Jitelal appealed to the public, local clubs and organisations for their assistance in conducting the examination smoothly, and stated any queries, suggestions or complaints related to the HSLCE may be made on Control Room Number 8131805715.
He wished the students appearing in the examination success.
