IMPHAL, Feb 23 : The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), Farmers’ Wing, has urged the State Government to immediately release compensation for farmlands rendered unusable due to the violence that began on May 3, 2023.
Addressing a press meet today at COCOMI head office in Lamphel, convenor Shyam Khuman stated that while the Centre released funds, the State has yet to distribute them to the affected farmers.
He highlighted that the Central Government had allocated approximately Rs 85.81 crores for the 2024-2025 period for the 10 affected districts, but the Manipur Government has yet to release these funds.
Despite the Agriculture Department submitting a list of 10,286 affected farmlands to the Home Department and district officers on February 14, 2025, for fund dispersal, no action has been taken, he claimed.
He also alleged that the Government hasn’t issued an order to survey land for the 2025-2026 compensation.
Shyam Khuman stressed that the struggling farmers need their rightful compensation promptly.
He warned that if the funds are not released quickly, the COCOMI Farmers’ Wing, along with the farmers, will launch a protest movement.
He also mentioned that while the new Government aims to resettle internally displaced persons (IDPs) in their homes, they will face significant difficulties if their entitled rights and compensation are not provided first.
