IMPHAL, Feb 23
The Indigenous People's Forum, Manipur has written to the Chairperson, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) highlighting the recent Litan violence and arsons, and biasness of the Central security forces operating in the region.
The letter to the NHRC on February 17 called the commission's intervention in addressing human rights issues.
The violent incident at Ukhrul's Litan which started on February 8 saw 25 Tangkhul residential houses burnt by Kuki militants who were allegedly backed by the security forces, said the IPFM, providing "photographic evidence" to the NHRC.
The "irresponsible action" of the security forces totally forfeited the trust and confidence of the people as it had acted in a "partisan manner", said the IPFM.
The forum alleged that the security forces guarded the houses of the Kukis but left Tangkhul Naga houses unprotected.
"The manner in which the personnel were involved in the burning of Tangkhul houses" should invite befitting punishment, it said.
"Every now and then, Kuki militants in cahoots with Central security forces are intimidating and harassing the innocent Tangkhul womenfolk." Kuki militants have been staying "alongside" the Central Paramilitary forces at Mongkot Chepu, Shangkai and Litan Sareikhong. The Central security forces meted out harassment to womenfolk and Tangkhul youths have been warned of dire consequences, said the IPFM.
"Therefore, it is our earnest prayer placed before you that you would maximize the high office of the NHRC to restore and give back our human rights and dignities which are in jeopardy in the face of the joint onslaughts of the Central security forces and Kuki militants," said the IPFM.
