IMPHAL, Feb 23 : An eminent exponent of Manipuri dance and music and a distinguished recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Yumlembam Ranjana Devi, passed away on February 20. She was 79.
The Sangeet Natak Akademi, its associate bodies and the YGR Nat Sankirtan Seidam Shang have extended their heartfelt condolences upon her demise.
Yumlembam Ranjana was a master in Nata-Sankirtana and Rasa traditions, a scholar, guru and lyricist.
According to YGR Nat Sankirtan Seidam Shang, Yumlembam Ranjana was born on January 17, 1947 at Yaiskul Hiruhanba Leikai, Imphal.
Hailing from a renowned family of artists, she dedicated her life to the preservation and promotion of Manipuri performing arts.
An accomplished academic with proficiency in Hindustani music, her scholarly pursuits, combined with her mastery of multiple languages, established her as a rare artist-scholar in the field of Manipuri dance and music.
She was a pioneer in Nata Sankirtana within the country and abroad, an approved lyricist and top-graded artist of All India Radio, Imphal.
She was also a female pioneer who introduced the notation of Sankirtana music in Hindustani music. Several research papers and books on Nata Sankirtana are to her credit, maintained YGR Nat Sankirtan Seidam Shang.
She has received many prestigious honours including awards from the Manipur State Kala Akademi, and Manipur Sahitya Parishad.
Condoling her demise, YGR Nat Sankirtan Seidam Shang asserted that Manipur has lost a legend and a towering cultural icon whose contributions enriched the spiritual and artistic heritage of the State and the Nation.
Meanwhile, the Sangeet Natak Akademi has extended solidarity to her bereaved family.
