IMPHAL, Feb 24: In a glaring example of "corruption and nepotism," 26 posts of Assistant Professor have been found filled at Kumbi College without any advertisement or following UGC guidelines, the All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has alleged.
Kumbi College is a Government aided institution in Bishnupur district.
The 26 Assistant Professors were appointed in November 2025.
The posts were allegedly filled without publishing an advertisement inviting applications from eligible candidates. It was done in absence of a Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) and against the guidelines of the University Grants Commission (UGC), AMSU general secretary, Salam Changkhonba said, speaking to  media persons.
He said the student body came across the alleged backdoor appointments at the Kumbi College when it was looking into the status of educational institutions under the "Campaign For Total Education".
Changkhonba said the names of the 26 appointed as Assistant Professors were included in the college's teaching staff list, published by the Principal on November 24, 2025.
The newly appointed Assistant Professors include three non-teaching staff of the college. One of the college's Lower Division Clerks (LDC), one Laboratory Assistant and a person employed as a Lab Assistant were appointed as Assistant Professors, Changkhonba said.
The Governing Body of Kumbi College has two nominees from Manipur University and one nominee from the Directorate of Higher Education. However, these nominees were not informed about the appointments made in the college, Changkhonba said.
This alleged backdoor appointment of the 26 Assistant Professors speaks volume about the practice of "corruption and nepotism" prevailing in the college, he said.
Such illegal practices undermine efforts to improve education. If no strict action is taken against persons involved in the "backdoor appointments," it would hurt the reputation of the college and the careers of its students, he added.
The appointment of the 26 Assistant Professors must be cancelled and stringent action must be taken up against all individuals involved in the "sham" recruitment, Changkhonba said.
