IMPHAL, Feb 24: Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL) has pushed for all number plates of both passenger service and private vehicles to be written in Meetei Mayek script latest by March.
Violators will be held liable for any untoward consequences that follow, MEELAL has cautioned.
As part of their relentless effort to enforce the indigenous script on the number plates of vehicles, MEELAL representatives today visited the parking lots of passenger service vehicles and signed an agreement with the concerned associations on the issue.
According to MEELAL advisor Sadokpam Tomba Mangang, as previously announced by MEELAL, a team went to the parking spaces to meet with the representatives of passenger service associations. They provided assurance to MEELAL to inscribe their number plates with the Meetei Mayek script.
MEELAL has also instructed them to write the destination (route) on their vehicles in Meetei Mayek. On top of this, it has issued a public appeal to all private vehicle owners to ensure that their number plates are in the indigenous script.
Highlighting the role of every individual in promoting and uplifting one's language and script, he called for enthusiastic cooperation among the people in this regard.
Further, he shared that MEELAL representatives met with L Radhakanta, Director of the Directorate of Language, Planning & Implementation at 9 am today where they discussed ways to promote Meetei Mayek. Another meeting has been scheduled for March 14.
