NEW DELHI, Feb 24
In another incident of racial abuse and crime against women from the North East in and around the National Capital, a 24-year-old resident doctor from Nagaland was allegedly subjected to a harrowing ordeal of sexual harassment and racial abuse outside All India India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Gorakhpur on the evening of February 22.
The victim, a third-year resident originally from Nagaland, reported being stalked and intimidated by three men while she was returning to the campus.
What Happened?
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the doctor was followed for approximately 1.5 kilometers. During this pursuit, the assailants reportedly hurled obscene comments and sexual threats and then targeted her with racial slurs regarding her North Eastern identity.
Escalating the intimidation near AIIMS Gate No. 2, one of the stalkers allegedly removed his shirt to threaten her while another miscreant allegedly committed an act of “bad touch” (molestation).
The attackers fled the scene only after the doctor raised an alarm by screaming for help.
Police Action and Investigation
Gorakhpur Police said an investigation has been launched on high-priority and that four specialized teams have been formed for speedy investigation.
While two of the attackers have already been arrested, the search continues for the third suspect involved in this high-profile case.
The incident has triggered significant backlash from the medical community and civil rights groups with the National Association of Resident Doctors (NAFORD) issuing a stern statement demanding immediate arrest of the perpetrators and enhanced security protocols for women doctors on and around medical campuses.
‘Deeply Shameful’ incident: Meghalaya CM
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday termed the ordeal faced by the resident doctor as “deeply shameful” and said such incidents should not just be sensational headlines that are forgotten and only highlighted when a new case occurs.
He urged authorities to take strict action against the perpetrators, emphasizing that women from the North East are “your sisters and daughters too.”
Second Incident of Racial Abuse in a Week
Incidentally, this is the second incident of racial abuse against North Easterners in North India.
Three young women from Arunachal Pradesh were racially abused by a neighbour in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar following a minor domestic dispute.
The incident took place on February 19, reportedly over a mundane maintenance issue, with the husband-wife neighbour allegedly directing a barrage of racist comments and derogatory remarks at the women, specifically targeting their identity and origin. News Live
