IMPHAL, Feb 26: Has Manipur University become a breeding ground for corruption and nepotism ?
This has been asked by student bodies as they highlight a recent "sham" recruitment in the university and a High Court order that has kept new appointment orders related to the recruitment in question at abeyance casting doubt on the process.
The Socialist Students' Union of Manipur (SSUM) and the Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA) have alleged that most of the candidates recruited in a recent recruitment of non-teaching staff are "relatives" of university employees.
KSA said the recruitment was held on January 29, 2026 amid allegations that there were lapses in the process.
The Manipur University issued the recruitment notice on May 13, 2025.
While recruitments of non-teaching staff require approval of the Cadre Recruitment Rules (CRRs) by the Visitor, the Manipur University went ahead with the recruitment without such an approval claiming the Ministry of Education had given the "go ahead verbally", alleged the KSA.
While there was already doubt in the conduct of the recruitment, the results declared on February 23, 2026 showed many of the successful candidates are relatives of university employees, asserted the KSA.
Supporting the KSA allegations, SSUM too provided a list of names of successful candidates who are allegedly relatives of many higher officials of the university.
While some of the selected candidates are sons and daughters of employees, many are their immediate relatives, SSUM said.
Relatives of the Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Assistant Registrar and many teaching and non-teaching staff of the university were selected in the recruitment, SSUM said.
The Registrar was the Chairperson of the Selection Committee and one of his relatives was selected, SSUM said.
Those selected also include the son of a Senior Assistant of College Development Council (CDC) MU and the daughter of a Junior Assistant, SSUM added.
Such "corrupt" practices have cast serious doubt on the recruitments held in the university. Recruitments have been reduced to a mere tool to collect huge amounts of money from innocent and unknowing citizens. The university must not conduct any fresh recruitments only to earn money from the public, said the SSUM.
Meanwhile, KSA said it welcomes yesterday's High Court order keeping the appointment of newly recruited candidates at abeyance until a final verdict.
It said KSA welcomes Chief Justice M Sundar's order to pause all processes related to the "sham" recruitment, which was held based on CRRs prepared under a non-existent provision of the Manipur University Act.
The student body said it is anticipating the High Court to do justice by cancelling the controversial recruitment in its entirety.
