IMPHAL, Feb 26 : The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (CJFD) has announced that it will decide whether to begin protests demanding the identification of illegal immigrants before the commencement of the census operation, after the Yaoshang Festival.
Addressing a programme at Wangoi Laiphrakpam Leikai in Imphal West today, CJFD finance secretary Sunil Karam stated that they have conveyed their demand regarding the census to the Chief Minister.
The Chief Minister, according to Sunil, has assured them that the Government will clarify its position after consulting with the Central leadership.
He said that the reports of the census, conducted every ten years, have a significant impact on Government policies.
The upcoming census, he said, will be particularly important for Manipur due to the ongoing issue of illegal immigration affecting the State.
He further emphasized that including illegal immigrants in the population count would deprive bonafide citizens of their rights.
Saying that they have been urging the Centre to conduct the census after identifying illegal immigrants, he added that the Government of India, however, has not given any consideration to their demand.
He also stated that the Government is set to begin the house count on April 1 this year, as part of the census which is scheduled to start on March 1, 2027.
CJFD convenor Jeetendra Ningomba, on the other hand, stated that conducting the census amid the current situation in Manipur would not be conducive let alone yield accurate results.
Saying that illegal immigrants are waiting for an opportune time to acquire Indian citizenship, he urged all elected representatives of Manipur to press the Centre to defer the census.
Reiterating their demand, he urged the Government to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) or a similar mechanism in the State before proceeding with the census.
