Woman remanded for theft

IMPHAL, Feb 26: The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West today remanded a 19-year-old woman in judicial custody for allegedly stealing a purse containing one gold ring, 3 ATM cards and some cash from Vishal Mega Mart, Kakwa at around 3.30 pm on January 8, 2026.
The accused was arrested earlier by Women Police Station, Senapati in connection with a similar offence.
As the accused was produced before the Court today, an APP of the State submitted that on January 9 morning, one Thangjam Bhawani of Singjamei Wangma Kshetri Leikai lodged a complaint at Singjamei police station stating that her purse containing one gold ring, 3 ATM cards and some cash was found missing inside the 1st floor of Vishal Mega Mart Kakwa at around 3.30 pm on January 8 while she was purchasing some goods.
Moreover, Rs 50,000 was withdrawn from her account on the same day by an unknown person.
During investigation, a message was received from the OC, Women Police Station, Senapati informing that the accused was arrested on January 13 in connection with a similar case and during interrogation she admitted that she was involved in the theft case on the 1st floor of Vishal Mega Mart, Kakwa on January 8.
Subsequently, Singjamei police took formal arrest of the accused on February 23, produced her before the Court on February 24 and took her into police custody till today.
From investigation made so far, it is evident that the accused stole the purse from the 1st floor of Vishal Mega Mart, Kakwa and withdrew Rs 50,000, the APP said.
The APP  further submitted that the accused is a habitual offender involved in many crimes before.
The Court, after hearing the submission of the APP and on perusal of the case record, remanded the accused in judicial custody till March 12.
