IMPHAL, Feb 27: The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (CJFD) has asked all the MLAs and Ministers to shoulder due responsibility of protecting the State’s indigenous people.
As a part of its series of consultation programmes on the demand for deferring census operations in Manipur, a public meeting was held today at New Checkon, Imphal East.
Speaking at the public meeting, CJFD convenor Jeetendra Ningomba attributed many of the untoward and unwanted incidents witnessed in the State to illegal immigrants.
Asserting that the indigenous people of the land are now facing a serious threat to their survival, he reiterated that no census operations should be carried out in Manipur without first identifying the illegal immigrants.
Even as illegal immigrants from neighbouring countries have been threatening the very survival of indigenous people, indigenous leaders are still unable to take any bold and decisive action, Jeetendra lamented.
If census operations are carried out under such a situation, the illegal immigrants will be taken into the count and they will become citizens of the State, the CJFD convenor said.
It is the duty and responsibility of all indigenous people to prevent illegal immigrants from becoming citizens of the State, he said.
At the same time, all the MLAs and Ministers must take leading roles, and demonstrate their grit and determination to protect the indigenous people, Jeetendra asserted.
CJFD has no objection to the census exercise per se but it is only requesting to defer the same exercise for some time considering the prevailing situation in Manipur, he said.
If the Government of India is unwilling to defer the census operations in Manipur until NRC or a similar mechanism is first implemented, it should take responsibility for all the consequences resulting thereof, he added.
