IMPHAL, Feb 28: Integrating more lessons on climate change and its impacts in school curriculum will help fight the global issue, said DMU Vice Chancellor Professor W Chandbabu today.
He said this during the sixth interaction programme featuring awardees of 6th Media Fellowship Programme on Climate Change Reporting organised at DM College of Science Imphal.
The programme was organised by the Media Resource Centre in collaboration with the State Climate Change Cell, Directorate of Environment and Climate Change.
Speaking at the event, Professor W Chandbabu said only the policy makers and authorities of the State can't fight climate change.
While policies are important, climate change must be faced collectively, he said.
Integrating more lessons on climate change in school curriculum would raise awareness and teach young children on the issue. This will encourage the young generations to take conscious decisions and help transform the society to act more responsibly to mitigate climate change, he said.
Reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on climate change requires concerted efforts of all stakeholders. The State must have a dedicated cell for achieving SDGs, he added.
He announced that the 7th Academic Council of the DM University has given the green light to introduce a Postgraduate course on Climate Change and Sustainability .
The course may introduce the course from the academic session 2026-27, making the DMU the first university in the North East to open such a course, he said.
Only the South Asian University (SAU) in Delhi offers the course at present, he added.
