IMPHAL, Feb 28: Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress Committee burnt the effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, condemning the arrest of the party's National youth leader Uday Bhanu Chib in Delhi.
Indian Youth Congress (IYC) National president Uday Bhanu Chib was arrested in Delhi on February 24 in connection with a "shirtless" protest during the AI Impact Summit in the National capital recently.
A Delhi Court has granted bail to Uday Bhanu Chib in the case.
Condemning the arrest of the IYC president, State youth Congress members led by their president Wahengbam Ananda tried to march from the Congress Bhavan towards the BJP office.
While police stopped and prevented the march, members of Youth Congress raised slogans denouncing the arrest of the IYC president and crackdown on peaceful protest.
Raising slogans, Congress youths burnt an effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Police snatched the effigy and a confrontation broke out.
Speaking to media persons, Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress president Wahengbam Ananda accused the Prime Minister of running an "authoritarian Government" and undermining the country's Constitution.
He accused the BJP-led Government of crackdown against peaceful and constitutional protests, and diluting the values of democracy.
The value of democracy under Prime Minister Modi has eroded, he said.
The BJP leaders and members who never took to the streets condemning the present Manipur conflict can be seen hitting the streets whenever their party or their leaders are criticised, Ananda said.
He said the BJP doesn't want and can't tolerate its mistakes and shortcomings pointed out.
Congress' protest at the AI Summit in Delhi was not aimed at defaming India's image. Rather, it was a protest to condemn India being defamed by showcasing China's AI robot as India's, Ananda said.
