IMPHAL, Feb 28
ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi has conferred the prestigious Innovative Farmer Award-2026 on Salam Rohendro Singh, a progressive aquaculture farmer from Imphal West district of Manipur, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to scientific fish farming and sustainable aquaculture practices.
Working under the guidance of Dr Ch Basudha Devi, Principal Scientist (Fisheries) and Head of Regional Centre, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre, Lamphelpat, Rohendro has successfully adopted and demonstrated advanced aquaculture technologies at the field level.
Rohendro manages approximately 5.5 hectares of land, with nearly 85 per cent of the operational area developed into water bodies, reflecting a highly specialized aquaculture-based farming system.
His farm is equipped with ten scientifically managed ponds and a circular hatchery supported by aeration and water management systems to maintain optimal water quality.
He practices short-duration polyculture with scientific stocking densities of around 25,000 fingerlings per hectare, maintaining a balanced combination of surface, column and bottom feeders to maximize productivity.
Through adoption of improved pond management practices, including liming, fertilization and nutritionally balanced feed, he achieves fish production ranging from 6,000 to 8,900 kg per hectare, with benefit-cost ratios reaching up to 4.5.
In addition to table fish production, Rohendro Singh has developed a successful carp seed production unit over 0.75 hectares, generating 3.2-3.5 lakh quality fingerlings annually within a short cycle of 90-95 days, thereby contributing significantly to local seed availability and livelihood enhancement in the region.
A major technological breakthrough achieved by him is the successful captive breeding of Sareng (Wallago attu), a high-value indigenous fish species traditionally dependent on wild seed collection. This innovation marks a significant step towards conservation and sustainable utilization of indigenous fish biodiversity.
The achievements of Salam Rohendro Singh serve as a model for scalable, science-based aquaculture, contributing to income generation, nutritional security and rural development in the NE region of India.
