IMPHAL, Feb 28
The death of BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte has snow-balled into a political storm in Manipur, with his family refusing to bury his mortal remains until the demand for a separate district is met by the Government.
At this juncture, Minister Govindas Konthoujam has made a big statement stating that everyone has the right to raise their demand in a democratic Nation.
“India is the biggest democratic country. Everybody can demand anything, but if it is found to be reasonable by the Government of India, by the State Government, then they may get it. There is no harm in demanding whatever they feel like,” the Manipur Minister said.
Govindas Konthoujam also termed the demand for handing over Vungzagin Valte’s attack case to NIA as reasonable.
Asked about the stalemate that has emerged after Valte’s death, Konthoujam said, “They are also in shock because one of their MLAs has unfortunately died. So they are expressing their anguish.”
It may be mentioned that the family of MLA Vung-zagin Valte, who died on February 20, nearly three years after being brutally attacked by a mob, said that they will not bury his body until the Centre fulfils its demand for a separate district.
The family has sought a separate district for the Zomi tribe, to which Valte belonged, and an inquiry by the National Investigation Agency into his death.
Valte was assaulted by a mob, allegedly comprising members of the Meitei community, on May 4, 2023. The attack took place at Nagamapal in Imphal when the MLA was returning from a meeting with then Chief Minister N Biren Singh; a day after ethnic violence broke out in the State.
