IMPHAL, Feb 3 : The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) has urged the MPs of Manipur to advocate for the postponement of the census during the ongoing Parliament session.
Speaking to the media at Wangkhei today, JFD convenor Jitendra Ningomba asserted that conducting the Census without first addressing the issue of illegal immigration in Manipur will lead to problems even larger than the ongoing crisis that has persisted since May 3, 2023.
He urged the MPs to call for the deferment of the house listing and housing Census, set to begin in April this year, as well as the overall Census exercise scheduled for 2027 during the Parliament session.
Jitendra also urged all the National political parties to pressure the Centre to defer the Census exercise.
If the Census is conducted without identifying illegal immigrants, they could be wrongfully counted as Indian citizens, he contended.
He continued that JFD is prepared to launch a massive movement in the last week of February if the Government ignores their demand.
Jitendra mentioned that JFD submitted a memorandum to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on December 15, 2025, in New Delhi, requesting the deferment of the Census until concrete actions are taken to identify illegal immigrants.
A similar memorandum was also submitted to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, the Directorate of Census, and the Election Commission, he added.
He said that they have been seeking an audience with the Governor to discuss the issue, but, to date, the Governor has not responded.
Jitendra further said that an all-party conclave was convened on December 27, where resolutions were passed to urge the Centre to initiate the Census exercise only after the NRC or a similar process is implemented in Manipur to identify illegal immigrants.
He reminded the political parties of these resolutions and urged them to raise the issue during the ongoing Parliament session.
