IMPHAL, Feb 7: The diversion road that is being used due to construction of Lamsang bridge will be blocked to all heavy vehicles from tomorrow until it is blacktopped, said several local bodies today.
"Either blacktop the diversion road or complete the construction of the bridge." Until either one of the two is done, the road will be blocked to all heavy vehicles, said the bodies, which include Lamsang Makha Leikai Welfare Association, Nupi Khunnai Lamsang Bazar, Educational Sports & Cultural Organisation Lamsang, Youth Association Taothong Lamsang and Linthoinganbi Welfare Association.
Speaking to reporters at the site of the under-construction bridge, Educational Sports and Cultural Organisation Lamsang secretary (organisation) Sairem Rajmani said the dust from the diversion road has become a health hazard.
Until it is blacktopped, the road will be blocked to all heavy vehicles, he added.
The construction of the Lamsang bridge has not been completed even after 5 years, despite the then declaration that it would be completed within 6 months, Rajmani said.
The locals and many organisations of the region have repeatedly appealed to the authorities concerned of the Government to complete the construction of the bridge early and on time. However, the construction work has dragged on with very little progress, he said.
In June 2024, Rajmani said, the contractor gave assurance to the people to complete the construction by December of the same year.
In April 2025, people staged protest demonstrations, urging the authorities to complete the project. The contractor then gave another assurance that it would be completed by May 2025, Rajmani said.
Further delay then forced people to block the road, and launch agitation. Aftermath of the agitation, the bridge deck was constructed on January 8, 2026.
While assurance was given that it would be completed by March this year, there are only four people working at the site, Rajmani said.
Considering the number of people working at site and pace, the construction is expected to take time. Until the construction of the bridge is done, the diversion road must be reconstructed and blacktopped for the safety and health of the people of the area, Rajmani said.
As the dust from the road has become a health hazard for the locals, it will be blocked to all heavy vehicles from tomorrow, he said. He sought the attention of the Chief Minister to look into the grievances and take steps to complete the construction of the bridge at the earliest.
