IMPHAL, Feb 8 : The Makhan Area Chief Chairmen Association, Manipur (MACCAM) has imposed a total shutdown within their jurisdiction with immediate effect while accusing the 8th Gorkha Regiment (8 GR) of acting under the influence and direction of 'Vaiphei goons' operating in Leimakhong area.
In a statement, the Association claimed that innocent villagers from Samruk, Konsaram, and K Lungwiram were illegally and forcibly stopped at Chingmang, Leimakhong, by personnel of the 8 GR yesterday around 12 pm, allegedly under the direction of some Vaiphei goons.
Condemning the conduct of the 8 GR personnel as unconstitutional, MACCAM stated that the claim made by security personnel that they could not open the gate due to the absence of orders from the 'perpetrators' is outrageous, shameful, and constitutes a direct assault on the Constitutional authority of the Indian State.
"This is entirely unacceptable and intolerable in a democratic society governed by the rule of law," it said, while alleging that certain Vaiphei elements in Leimakhong area are conspiring to destabilize peace and provoke unrest in the region.
Saying that such acts of alleged anarchy and unconstitutional conduct by the security forces are a serious threat to public trust and National integrity, MACCAM demanded intervention of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Government of Manipur to restore Constitutional order in the foothill regions without delay.
Bandhs observed in Naga areas have consistently upheld humanitarian principles, exempting medical emergencies, religious activities, wedding, condolence programmes, airport travel, students etc, it said and alleged that some Vaiphei goons, however, have completely disregard these bandh ethics in Leimakhong areas, reflecting sheer lawlessness and moral bankruptcy.
