SC Judge advocates speedy justice delivery

IMPHAL, Feb 28: Supreme Court Judge Justice Sanjay Karol has stated that speedy delivery of justice on criminal cases can certainly reduce crimes in the society.    
Speaking at a lecture series on Criminal Law held at the High Court of Manipur Auditorium in Mantripukhri, Justice Sanjay Karol said that delaying criminal trials only serves to increase the rate of unwanted incidents in society.
The event was organized in connection with the 13th anniversary of the High Court of Manipur and the Manipur Judicial Academy.
Justice Sanjay Karol noted that there should be no divide between the Bar and the Bench when it comes to the welfare of the Nation.
He highlighted Article 39A of the Indian Constitution, which mandates that the justice delivery system must be accessible to all, ensuring that no citizen is deprived of justice due to economic or other factors.
He urged lawyers to take a leading role in Nation-building, stressing that their responsibilities extend beyond the courtroom to maintaining the integrity of the country’s borders and its internal unity.
Supreme Court Justice N Kotiswar spoke on the evolving legal landscape.
He addressed the growing threat of cyber-crimes, describing them as one of the most significant challenges to modern society.
He called for a thorough understanding and implementation of the Data Protection Act 2023 and the Data Production Rules 2025.
Justice Kotiswar further asserted that democracy has no meaning without the rule of law, and called upon the legal fraternity to strengthen the legal framework to ensure peace and progress in the region.
The programme included specialized technical sessions featuring prominent legal experts from across the country.
Justice M Nirmal Kumar (Madras High Court) discussed the "Nuances of Criminal Trials."
Justice PN Prakash (former Judge, Madras High Court) shared insights on trial management, the framing of charges, and proce- dures for handling absconding accused persons.
E Chandrasekaran (Special Public Prosecutor, NIA Madras High Court) lectured on "New Criminal Laws and Their Application in Trials and Appeals."
The event saw a gathering of top judicial officials including Justice M Sundar, Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur, Justice Ahanthem Bimol and Justice A Guneshwar Sharma, Judges of the High Court of Manipur, Lenin Hijam, Advocate General of Manipur, S Brajabihari, Chairman of the Bar Council of Manipur, N Kumarjit and Ch Bimolchandra, presidents of High Court and All Manipur Bar Associations respectively, and  Golmei Gaiphulshillu, Director, Manipur Judicial Academy.
