IMPHAL, Mar 1: The Government, political parties and all stakeholders including the public have been urged to preserve Koirengei airfield as a tangible historical site.
Addressing a press meet at Manipur Press Club, Imphal, Shanta Nahakpam, convenor of the Citizens for the Protection and Preservation of Air Field Koirengei, said the airfield holds significant historical importance and every effort must be put in to preserve it.
The Koirengei airfield in Imphal was constructed between 1942 and 1943 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).
Stressing the importance of preserving the historical site, Shanta said the organisation will engage in talks with commanders and authorities of the Central security forces stationed at the airfield and relevant authorities of the Government.
In the meantime, all construction activities at the airfield must pause, he added.
Preserving the airfield as a tangible historical site requires collective efforts and push from all sectors including the State Government, political parties, organisations and the public, he said.
Speaking to media persons, historian Rajeshwor said the organisation, Citizens for the Protection and Preservation of Air Field Koirengei, was formed by like minded persons including historians, research scholars and experts with the purpose to preserve the historical site.
Rajeshwor said the Koirengei airfield was constructed as the third airfield in Manipur during World War-II in 1942.
When there was fighting on the border, thousands of displaced people from Burma and the border region took shelter at the airfield, he said.
The Koirengei airfield also served as a base of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, he added, calling on all stakeholders to push for its conservation as a tangible historical site.
The press meet was organised by the People's Alliance for Peace and Progress, Manipur.
